My Genealogical Tree - Discussion

My Genealogical Story: Maternal Line and Military Service

I chose to detail my maternal line of my family because of the line's rich American military history. I was born January 25, 1985, to Luke Mahdi and Susanne Wilson, in Los Angeles, California. My mother was born June 1, 1946, in Terre Haute, Indiana, where her family had lived for several generations. Her father was older in life when she was born. Her father, Gene Wilson Sr., was born August 4, 1902, in Terre Haute, Indiana. He served honorably as a Major in the Army Air Force in Papua, New Guinea, during World War II, and left lengthy maps, notes, and collections of artifacts that any historian would enjoy viewing. My maternal grandmother was Virginia Bateman, born in Elsinore, Utah, in 1918. However, we will go back to Gene C. Wilson Sr, my maternal grandfather's line. Gene C. Wilson Sr. was born to Ethel Haller, born 1881 in Lebanon, Indiana, and Everett E. Wilson, born 1881 in Hamilton, Indiana. Now we will begin to follow the Haller line, as they are my Civil War Union ancestors.

The Hallers to the Bennetts

My great-grandmother, Ethel (Haller) Wilson, was the youngest child of Nathaniel W. Haller, born 1834, in Dayton, Ohio, to Philip and Susannah Haller. Nathan Haller enlisted in Lew Wallace's Zouaves, Indiana 11th, Company G, at the beginning the Civil War with an initial 3-month enlistment. He immediately re-enlisted when a 3-year call was asked of veterans. He saw action at Shiloh and was medically evacuated from the field after intense fighting. There were four Haller brothers, and three survived the war. The youngest, Levi Haller, died of disease in Kentucky, leaving behind a wife with child.

Nathan Haller's father, Philip Haller, was born in 1802 in Cumberland Township, Pennsylvania. His wife, Susannah Haller, was born in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, in 1803. At this point, the Haller line via Philip is no longer accessible as of yet. So, we will continue with his wife, Susannah Haller, nee Bennett. Susannah (Bennett) Haller's parents were William Bennet, Jr., and Mary Magdalene Good. William Bennett Jr. was born in 1781 in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. His wife, Mary (Good) Bennett, was born 1785 in Lehigh, Pennsylvania. William Bennett, Jr., was born to William Bennett, Sr., who immigrated to the British colonies in 1770, and enlisted as a private in the Continental Army at the outset of the American Revolution. He was eventually promoted to Lieutenant by the end of the war. An additional son of Lieutenant William Bennett, Sr., John Bennett, was a Captain in the War of 1812 in the 1st Pennsylvania Division. It is at this point that the family genealogy ends.

In all, I am proud to claim one World War II veteran, four Union Civil War ancestors, one War of 1812 ancestor, and two Revolutionary War veterans on the American side, one of which was not listed here due to the fact that it was in another line of the family not for this project.
